Bathgate’s CSignum raises £2.6m to expand underwater monitoring

Bathgate technology company CSignum has secured £2.6 million to increase manufacturing and expand sales of its underwater and underground wireless monitoring systems.

The funding comes from Archangels, PXN Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, the British Business Bank and US angel investors. It follows a £6 million investment round in April 2025.

CSignum says it has progressed from trials to larger deployments with UK water utilities and international customers. The latest investment will support wider commercial use of its EM2 technology.

Wireless monitoring for water utilities

CSignum develops systems that transmit sensor data through water and ground, allowing businesses to monitor locations where conventional wireless connections are difficult.

Its EM-2Q water monitoring system uses a submerged station to send readings to a fixed or portable gateway. Designed for rivers, lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters, it removes the need for a cable connection to retrieve sensor data.

According to the company, the equipment can also be recovered using a remotely activated airbag, reducing the need for divers during retrieval.

The commercial application is straightforward: utilities and other organisations need regular measurements from underwater sensors, while keeping equipment accessible for maintenance.

Overseas projects and new leadership

CSignum reports involvement in a Gulf of Mexico smart-buoy project, completed trials with two US water-monitoring organisations and work on an infrastructure project in Asia.

The business has also appointed John Nicholls as chief executive. Previous chief executive Jonathan Reeves moves into the chief strategy officer role.

Founded in 2020, CSignum is headquartered in Bathgate, West Lothian, and says it continues to recruit across the UK, US and EU.
