Babcock International Group operates Rosyth Dockyard on the Firth of Forth in Fife, which the company describes as one of the largest waterside manufacturing and repair facilities in the UK. The site is part of Babcock's marine business, and Rosyth Royal Dockyard Ltd is the licensed operator named by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. This profile covers the Scottish dockyard rather than the wider group.
Rosyth is building all five Type 31 general-purpose frigates for the Royal Navy, based on Babcock's Arrowhead 140 design, under a contract signed in November 2019. The first of the class, HMS Venturer, has been rolled out of the build hall. The dockyard also carries out maintenance on the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, which were assembled at Rosyth through the Aircraft Carrier Alliance.
Construction of the dockyard began in 1909, and Babcock bought it in 1997. Its largest dock, Dock 1, is 320 metres long and 42.1 metres wide. The site is also home to seven retired Royal Navy submarines, and HMS Swiftsure is due to be the first decommissioned UK nuclear-powered submarine to be fully dismantled and recycled there.
