Archangels is an Edinburgh-based business angel syndicate that invests in early-stage technology and life sciences companies in Scotland. It was established in 1992 by Barry Sealey and Mike Rutterford and describes itself as the longest continuously operating business angel syndicate in the world. The syndicate is organised through Archangel Investors Limited, a company limited by guarantee registered in Scotland.
Its members focus on IP-rich businesses in fields ranging from software development to biopharmaceuticals and bionics, usually investing alongside other funders. In 2025 the syndicate reported leveraging £41.1 million of investment, including about £12.8 million from members and £28.4 million from co-investors such as the Scottish National Investment Bank, Scottish Enterprise, Old College Capital, and Par Equity. It reported a further £17.9 million in the first half of 2026.
Exits include Edinburgh wearable technology company Reactec, acquired by Ideagen. Earlier portfolio companies have included NCTech, Optoscribe, and ZoneFox, and the syndicate continues to provide follow-on funding to businesses it has backed, such as Edinburgh nature-risk analytics company Earth Blox.
