Danu Robotics is an Edinburgh company that builds AI-guided robots for sorting recyclable waste. Its systems are designed for materials recovery facilities, picking target items from mixed recycling on existing conveyor lines. The company's office is at the National Robotarium on Heriot-Watt University's Riccarton campus.
Each system pairs a computer vision unit, which outlines objects on the belt, with grippers that pick and drop them. A pick is only recorded once the item lands in the bin. The two-arm robots need less than a metre of conveyor space and, according to the company, can be installed in under a day. Hardware is sold, the software is licensed, and high-wear grippers can be changed in about 20 minutes.
Danu is led by founder and chief executive Amy Ma. Supporters named on its website include Scottish Enterprise, Octopus Ventures, Sustainable Ventures, and Edinburgh Innovations, and Glasgow City Council's Blochairn depot acted as a beta test partner. The company was a Scottish EDGE winner in 2023 and is a member of the Recycled Materials Association Scotland.
