Findlay Irvine is an electronics and engineering company based on Bog Road in Penicuik, Midlothian. It designs and makes electro-mechanical equipment and software, mainly for safety monitoring on runways, roads, and railways.
Its main products are friction and skid resistance testing equipment for airport runways and highways, weather and surface condition monitoring systems, and rail safety products. The company sells into airports, highways, rail, helidecks, and defence, and its own service department supports equipment already in use. A Scotsman report highlighted by the company said its runway testing devices are used at more than 500 airports in 100 countries.
The company was set up in 1960 by James Findlay and John Irvine, who had met while working at Ferranti in Edinburgh. They began by renting half of Penicuik's former primary school. They later took over and bought the whole building, which still forms the core of the production site. The business remains family owned, with research and development, production, servicing, and sales all based in Penicuik.
