Flotation Energy is an Edinburgh-headquartered offshore wind developer working on fixed and floating wind farms in the UK and overseas. It has offices at Hobart House on Hanover Street in Edinburgh and in Aberdeen, along with offices in Australia, Taiwan, and Japan.
The company identifies offshore wind sites and takes them through development towards construction and operation. Its UK portfolio includes Green Volt and Cenos, alongside the Morecambe project in the Irish Sea and the White Cross floating project in the Celtic Sea, which secured offshore and onshore planning approval in 2025. Flotation Energy expects Green Volt to become Europe's first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm in 2029. Overseas projects include Chu Tin in Taiwan and Toki in Japan.
The business was established in 2018 by Lord Nicol Stephen and Allan MacAskill, whose earlier work included the Kincardine floating wind farm off Aberdeen. Japan's TEPCO Renewable Power bought all of the company's shares in November 2022, and Flotation Energy now operates as part of the TEPCO Group.
