Caledonian Maritime Assets is a Scottish Government-owned company that owns ferries, ports, harbours, and related infrastructure used by lifeline ferry services. It is based in Port Glasgow and manages major maritime assets that support routes serving Scotland's west coast, the Clyde, and island communities.
The company owns vessels and shore infrastructure, commissions new assets, and plans maintenance and improvement work across its estate. Its responsibilities include working with ferry operators, shipyards, contractors, harbour users, public bodies, and communities on vessel and port projects.
The current Caledonian Maritime Assets structure was created in 2006 when the former Caledonian MacBrayne business was reorganised and its asset ownership separated from ferry operations. CMAL's role is therefore centred on owning and developing the physical assets used to deliver ferry services rather than operating the routes itself. Its investment programme includes both new vessels and upgrades to existing harbour infrastructure.
