SSEN Transmission owns and maintains the high-voltage electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, operating lines and substations at 132kV, 275kV, and 400kV. It is the trading name of Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission plc, which is registered in Scotland with its registered office at Inveralmond House on Dunkeld Road in Perth.
The network carries electricity from generators, including wind, hydro, solar, and marine projects, to the distribution networks that supply homes and businesses. Much of the company's work involves connecting new renewable generation and reinforcing the grid, working with the National Energy System Operator, other transmission owners, and generators. Its investment is regulated by Ofgem through a price control framework, and it has published a RIIO-T3 business plan and a Pathway to 2030 programme of network projects.
The company is 75% owned by SSE plc and 25% by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. It forms part of the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks brand, adopted by SSE's networks businesses in September 2016. Current consent applications include a 132kV overhead line to connect the Strathy Wood Wind Farm in Sutherland.
