Nami Surgical is a medical device company developing miniaturised ultrasonic scalpels for robotic-assisted surgery. It was founded in 2021 as a spin-out from the University of Glasgow and is based at Wilson Business Park in Hillington.
Ultrasonic scalpels cut and seal soft tissue using high-frequency vibration, but conventional designs have been too large for the wristed instruments used by surgical robots. Nami has developed a scalpel that the company says fits through standard 8mm surgical ports and articulates inside the body, together with a modular driving system that controls the ultrasonic energy delivered. Its commercial approach centres on development partnerships with surgical robotics and medical device companies.
The company was founded by Dr Nico Fenu and Dr Rebecca Cleary, and Nikki Palfrey became chief executive in January 2026. Investors include Eos Advisory, Scottish Enterprise, and the Investment Fund for Scotland. In October 2026 the Scottish National Investment Bank led a £3.4 million funding extension, which Nami said would support commercialisation and add five jobs at Hillington.
