Causeway Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing microRNA-based medicines for tendon disease. A spin-out from the University of Glasgow, it is based in the Clinical Innovation Zone at the Imaging Centre of Excellence on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus in Glasgow.
Its lead candidate, TenoMiR, is a one-time injection that mimics microRNA-29a, a molecule the company's founders found is depleted in damaged tendons and helps regulate collagen production. In October 2025 the company reported Phase 2 results in lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow. Patients who received the injection at the correct site showed statistically significant improvements in pain, function, and tendon structure, although the full trial population did not meet the primary pain endpoint. Causeway plans a Phase 3 study in tennis elbow and a Phase 2 study in rotator cuff tendinopathy.
Earlier-stage programmes include CardioMiR, a preclinical approach to heart failure that builds on research at Goethe University, and DermaMiR, aimed at skin ageing. The company was founded in 2015 by Dr Derek Gilchrist, Neal Millar, and Professor Iain McInnes. Declan Doogan, its chairman and chief executive, led an £8.75 million financing round in 2023 to fund the Phase 2 trial, and the company has a US subsidiary, Causeway Therapeutics, Inc.
