BioPhotonix is a Glasgow medical technology company developing Revolux, a light-therapy device for people with early and intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The company is based at TheBeyond in SkyPark on Elliot Street and was incorporated in Scotland in March 2026.
Revolux is a portable binocular device that delivers photobiomodulation to the retina in 12-minute sessions. It is designed for community optometry, domiciliary optometry, and hospital clinics, so that optometrists can offer treatment in the same setting where dry AMD is often first diagnosed. The company plans to supply the device to practices on a subscription basis, with clinician training and integrated reporting.
Revolux is still in development and is not yet available for sale. BioPhotonix says it has completed lab validation of functional prototypes and is working towards design freeze. That stage will be followed by a pilot clinical evaluation and Class IIa conformity marking for the EU and UK markets. The company was founded by Adail Islam, an optometrist and orthoptist. It received a £10,000 Young EDGE award in Round 27 of Scottish EDGE in June 2026.
