Isle of Mull Cheese is a family-run dairy farm and cheesemaker at Sgriob-ruadh Farm, just inland from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. The Reade family makes cheese and a whey-based spirit from the milk of its own herd, selling through its farm shop and online shop, and its cheese is stocked by independent cheese retailers elsewhere in the UK.
The farm produces Isle of Mull Farmhouse, a raw-milk, cloth-bound cheddar-style cheese, and Hebridean Blue. Milk comes from a closed herd of around 130 dairy cattle, mainly Friesian, fed partly on draff from the nearby Tobermory Distillery. A small pork unit supplies sausages, bacon, black pudding, and hams for the farm shop and other shops on the island.
The Reades moved from a dairy farm in Somerset to Mull in 1980, started making cheese from surplus milk, and stopped selling liquid milk in 2000 to concentrate on cheesemaking. Visitors can use the Glass Barn café and shop and book farm tours. The business says the farm generates all of its own electricity and heating from water, wind, and wood. Brendan, Shelagh, and Garth Reade now own and run the farm.
