Orkney Gin Company is a family-run distillery on the island of Burray in Orkney, trading through Orkney Spirits Limited. It makes gin, akvavit, and vodka in small batches at a purpose-built micro-distillery overlooking Scapa Flow, selling online to UK customers and supplying trade stockists.
Its first products, Johnsmas and Mikkelmas gins, are named after Orcadian midsummer and harvest traditions and are made by steeping botanicals in seven-times distilled spirit. In 2021 the company added a 250-litre still and launched Aatta, a London Dry gin distilled eight times. The range has since grown to include several Old Tom gins, Sule Skerry gin, Orkney Vodka, and Orkney Akvavit, which the company describes as the first akvavit made in Scotland. Bottling, labelling, and boxing are done by hand on site.
Gary and Andrea Watt set up the business after securing an operating licence in 2015 and began full production early the following year, making 300 bottles of each of their first two recipes. Shops, bars, and restaurants can buy direct or through wholesalers including Master of Malt and Select Drams, and in Orkney and Shetland through James Wilson and JW Gray. The distillery has no shop or visitor centre.
